IH Taylorsville1A new health center dedicated to helping children in crisis has opened in Taylorsville, bringing expanded mental and behavioral health services to families across the Salt Lake Valley.

The Intermountain Health Primary Children’s Hospital Behavioral Health Center–Taylorsville Campus, located at 5770 S. 1500 West, was set to begin serving patients on Sept. 6. The 90,000-square-foot facility was made possible through a $25 million investment from the State of Utah and generous philanthropic support to Intermountain Health’s Primary Promise campaign.

“We are so pleased to welcome the Behavioral Health Center to Taylorsville,” said Mayor Kristie Overson. “Having this resource here in our community means local families won’t have to look far to find the care and support their children need. It’s an incredible addition to our city and we are so proud to be home to this truly life-saving center.”

The state-of-the-art campus includes inpatient and outpatient services, family-friendly waiting areas, sensory spaces and patient rooms designed to allow parents to stay overnight with their children. It also features a Crisis Walk-In Center that remains open around the clock to provide immediate help for kids and teens in distress.

IH Taylorsville2At the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 22, Utah Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson shared a personal reflection that left her visibly moved. She recalled growing up in Taylorsville and walking through open fields (Yes, there were fields back then in Taylorsville, she joked) to visit a childhood friend. Later, she learned that her friend was struggling with mental health issues at the time, and she shared her belief that a facility like this would have been a tremendous resource.

The center opens amid heightened concern about youth mental health in Utah. In recent years, nearly one in four high school students reported seriously considering suicide, with many more experiencing depression and anxiety. Intermountain Health leaders say the Taylorsville facility marks a significant step toward meeting this growing need.

Families can also access support through the center’s statewide referral and consultation line, 801-313-7711, or call 988 for crisis response through the SafeUT app.

Mayor Overson, who participated in the ribbon cutting, said the new campus represents both progress and promise. "We are proud, too, of the creative efforts by our city’s senior staff in crafting an agreement to turn the adjacent, previous hotel property into much-needed parking space for the new health center," she added. "The significance of that out-of-the-box thinking cannot be overstated, and it truly has created a win-win for both our city and the children’s health center and patients."

The Intermountain Health Primary Children’s Hospital Behavioral Health Center–Taylorsville Campus is not just a building, she said. "It’s a commitment to children and families. It’s about building a stronger, healthier future together.”
