If you haven't yet seen it, be sure to visit Taylorsville City Hall to take in a colorful, community-focused mural created by Taylorsville students. The mural, which can be viewed during business hours on the second floor, was painted by the Taylorsville High School Art Club as a representation of community togetherness and spirit.
The project began at the start of the school year in 2019, and has taken several iterations of classes throughout the years to finish it. Toward its completion, the art club also solicited input from Taylorsville community members as a foundation to build upon. A survey was distributed and presented on the project to the staff of Taylorsville High School to gain insight into what the Taylorsville community would like to see in the mural.
“We wanted our mural design to feel like you were walking down the streets of Taylorsville, seeing the main things that bring this community to life," notes Taylorsville visual arts teacher Nicole Lavely in the mural's description. "We wanted our audience to have many things to look at so that, as they spent more time with it, they would see more and more things they recognized.”
“There is something for everyone to connect to in the mural," she adds. "If you are a long-time resident, you may recognize the Bennion house. If you are a recent graduate from high school, you may notice Chad from Walmart rising out from the clouds. We wanted to make it special while also keeping it fun.”
Taylorsville Mayor Kristie Overson describes the mural as lovely and a wonderful addition to City Hall.
“I had been working with Miss Lavely for almost a year to get this piece of art in our city," Mayor Overson told the City Council at a previous meeting. "It takes really more than just a quick glance to appreciate the detail and understand the story behind this mural. I just love it."
This mural represents the community of Taylorsville and Taylorsville High students, and the way that community connects, Lavely says. She ends the description of the mural stating, “It is work like this that makes an impact, that creates unforgettable memories and experiences that students can carry in their hearts as they go off to start the next chapters of their lives.”
