Laundromat Donation

Local Laundromat Brings Holiday Cheer to Families in Need

January Briefing
TVPD Laundromat

Speed Kleen Laundromat recently donated 10 complete laundry baskets filled with food and a gift card to support families through the Taylorsville Police Department’s Victim Advocate Program. This generous contribution has been a cherished tradition for the Speed Kleen family for many years, helping local families enjoy the holiday season.

Mayor Overson, Chief Cottam and Deputy Chief Lloyd joined in recognizing the donation and its impact on the community. TVPD victim advocates were also thanked for their hard work, which extends well beyond the holidays. Their year-round efforts to assist families in need help ensure community members feel supported and cared for throughout the year.

TVPD2-CheshireEmployee of the Month

Lt. Cheshire has more than 25 years of experience in law enforcement. He began his career with the West Valley Police Department before hiring on with the Taylorsville Police Department when it was formed in 2021.

His extensive experience includes working in Patrol, K-9, Special Investigations, the U.S. Marshals Office Task Force, Narcotics Investigations (including working with the Drug Enforcement Administration), Special Victims Investigations, hostage negotiations, and as a Patrol sergeant and Violent Crimes sergeant. Lt. Cheshire currently takes lead in overseeing portions of our Uniformed Operations, Professional Standards and Internal Affairs divisions.

He was nominated and selected as Employee of the Month by Chief Cottam, who noted his initial hesitancy to nominate a member of the command staff. However, Chief Cottam stated he simply “could not ignore all he has done for the City of Taylorsville and TVPD.”

Recently, TVPD has incorporated numerous in-service training courses, hired several new officers and conducted several additional training courses beyond typical requirements, all with the goal of maintaining a top-tier agency staffed with well-trained, well-rounded officers. Overseeing essentially three divisions also is a significant balancing act that presents unique challenges.

As Mayor Overson often reminds, we are all “Team Taylorsville.” Lt. Cheshire regularly praises and thanks the line-level supervisors, officers and support staff who work with him to fulfill the responsibilities he oversees, which further reflects the mayor’s sentiment.

In his free time, Lt. Cheshire enjoys being with his family, which often means coaching his children in various sports. Congratulations Lt. Cheshire and thank you for your service!

City Brings Police Department In-House, Forms TVPD

TVPD1The Taylorsville City Police Department launched at midnight on July 1, 2021, following a yearlong transition period.

Taylorsville City leaders decided in summer 2020 to end their contract with the Unified Police Department (UPD) and move police services in-house.

During that year of transition, a Project Management Team, made up primarily of administrators and staff already working for the city, met weekly to oversee creation of the new Taylorsville City Police Department.

The new department launched with a formal Swearing-In Ceremony on June 21, 2021.

Leading the department are Chief Brady Cottam and Deputy Chiefs Miller and Lloyd. In all, more than 60 officers make up TVPD. Chief Cottam said the force includes the "best of the best."

"Our officers and staff support have integrated well with respect to bringing their talents and previous experiences together to ensure a positive culture within the department and quality services to the community," Chief Cottam said. "These efforts are encapsulated in our core values, which are: Transparency, Connection, Collaboration, Respect and Innovation.

"I am confident in our personnel," he added. "We have hired good, proactive people who are great problem-solvers — the epitome of our role within the community. They are doing good things in life, which I believe translates to doing good in their profession."
