For Taylorsville High School senior Callie Tolman, years of late nights studying, setting goals and pushing herself academically have led to a moment of national recognition. She has been named a National Merit Finalist, an honor that places her among the top-performing students in the nation.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is a prestigious academic competition that recognizes high-achieving students based on PSAT scores, academic performance and overall success. Each year, more than 1.3 million students enter the program, with only a small percentage advancing to finalist standing. The winners, who receive a $2,500 scholarship and strengthened prospects for corporate- and college-sponsored awards, will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July.

“Being named a National Merit Finalist is an amazing honor,” Tolman said. “It means the effort I have put into my education is being recognized, and it inspires me to keep working diligently throughout my schooling.”

She points to the support she finds among her classmates as a key part of that journey. “The most helpful thing for me has been talking with the students around me. Building a support system of other motivated students has really helped me achieve my goals.”

Tolman’s success comes as no surprise to her teachers, who point to her academic ability and character.

“I can’t think of someone more deserving of a scholarship than Callie,” said Rachel Butterfield, an English teacher at Taylorsville High School. “She is an excellent writer who isn’t afraid to ask questions and is passionate about the things that are important to her.”

“Although she is quiet, she has a strong presence in the classroom,” added social studies teacher Jennifer Talkington. “She consistently completes her work with care and thoughtfulness, often making connections that others don’t see. Her insight, determination and strong work ethic truly set her apart.”

Tolman has remained actively involved beyond the classroom. She has served as treasurer of Taylorsville High School’s Key Club chapter for two years, participated as an AP ambassador for English Language and Composition, and volunteers as a baker for the Cake4Kids organization. She was also named the school’s English Sterling Scholar and advanced as a semifinalist in the statewide program.

After graduation, Tolman plans to attend Utah State University, where she will major in nutrition science before pursuing medical school and a career in anatomic pathology.

Her advice to other students is simple. “Keep going,” she said. “Keep setting new goals for yourself and do something small each day toward them.”
