Donated art supplies are finding new life at Secondhand Salamander, a creative reuse storefront now open in Taylorsville with a focus on creativity, affordability and sustainability.

Taylorsville City and ChamberWest officials celebrated the opening of Secondhand Salamander with a Ribbon Cutting on July 1. The nonprofit creative reuse center is located at 2238 W. 5400 South.

Secondhand Salamander accepts donations of new and partially used arts and crafts supplies, then offers them back to the community at deeply discounted prices. The store’s goal is to help make art more accessible while keeping usable materials out of the waste stream.

Established in 2024, Secondhand Salamander is the only creative reuse center in the Salt Lake Valley, and it is now operating from its first physical location. The storefront will allow the organization to offer classes, events and private event space, in addition to providing affordable art supplies.

The 501(c)(3) nonprofit is run entirely by volunteers. Its mission is to make art accessible to everyone by lowering the financial barrier to new artistic experiences and expression, while also supporting sustainability.

“We are so pleased to welcome Secondhand Salamander to Taylorsville,” Mayor Kristie Overson said at a recent City Council meeting. “This is such a creative and meaningful addition to our city. It gives people an affordable way to explore art while also encouraging reuse and sustainability.”

Secondhand Salamander is open Wednesday through Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information is available on on their website
