Shield616A 250-mile bicycle ride completed over four days last fall has brought added protection to the Taylorsville City Police Department.

Shield 616 presented nine complete rifle-rated vest sets to Taylorsville police officers during an April 22 ceremony. The life-saving equipment is designed to better protect officers during high-risk calls, including active-shooter situations and other threats involving high-velocity rounds.

The donation was made possible through the Shield 616 bicycle ride from St. Anthony, Idaho, to Salt Lake City, completed by Police Chief Brady Cottam and three TVPD officers, along with generous contributions from community members and supporters.

“This ride was about more than the miles,” Chief Cottam said. “It was about making sure our officers have the protection they need when they are called into dangerous situations. We are incredibly grateful to Shield 616 and to every person who donated, encouraged our riders and supported this mission.”

Shield 616-2Shield 616 is a nonprofit organization that provides life-saving equipment to law enforcement agencies across the country through donations and community support. While standard-issue body armor is typically designed to protect against handgun rounds, rifle-rated plates provide additional protection against higher-velocity threats.

Chief Cottam said the equipment is especially important because patrol officers are often the first to arrive at emergency calls. While specialized units may have additional protective gear, patrol officers frequently must respond before those resources arrive. Domestic disturbance calls can be particularly dangerous, he added, because officers may encounter high-powered firearms in rapidly changing and unpredictable situations. The protective armor provides an additional layer of safety during those critical first moments on scene.

Shield 616 was founded by former law enforcement officer Jake Skifstad following the 2015 Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado Springs, where officers faced rifle fire during a deadly attack. The experience underscored the importance of ensuring officers have access to appropriate protective equipment before it is needed.

For TVPD, the nine donated vest sets represent both added safety and a strong show of community support. From the long days on the road to the April presentation ceremony, the project demonstrated a shared commitment to officer safety, public service and helping officers return home safely to their families.
