Background

Just three days after the massive tornado that struck Joplin, Mo., an EF2 tornado struck the 20,000 residents of Sedalia, Mo. The town suffered no casualties and survivors reported only minor injuries. Officials were quick to point out that the use of social media — before, during and after the storm — as one of the main reasons for the lack of injuries.

Implementation

Emergency Plan

As part of Taylorsville City’s emergency response plan, in the event of an emergency or disaster, administration and staff, in conjunction with our first responders, will provide alerts, warnings and protective action recommendations as rapidly as possible.

The city’s public information officer will share timely information as soon as feasibly possible, which may include coordinating with neighboring jurisdictions, county and state officials and all media representatives, to ensure all accurate, necessary and critical information is provided to the community.

Depending upon the scale of the emergency, the city may coordinate with the Salt Lake County Emergency Management team to initiate the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (iPAWS) messaging, which is like an “Amber Alert” but specific to an event or incident.

Notification

Public messaging may be provided in a variety of ways (in no specific order) depending upon the timeliness and severity of an event, as follows:

  • Reverse 911 (Salt Lake Valley Emergency Response Coordination Center – Dispatch)
  • Social media (Instagram, Facebook and X)
  • eNotifications from Taylorsville City (email messages)
  • Press conferences (television, radio, print)
  • Emergency alerts (iPAWS)

As soon as possible, city officials will also attempt to translate emergency public information into Spanish and other commonly spoken languages within the city.
